Korean National SD18

[KNR SD18
photo here] Pretty much forgotten by most railfan publications, including the popular "Diesel Spotters Guide(s)" have been Korean National Railway's diverse fleet of six-axle EMDs. The KNR railroad owned steam-generated equipped SD9s and SD18s, plus second-generation SDPs. At one time in the late 1960's, the KNR roster included SDP28s #6101-6104; SDP38s #6201-6219 (freight power) and #6351-6363 (passenger service); SD9s #6001-6029, and SD18s. Pictured here is the #6006 on a sunny November morning in 1969 at the Yongsan, Korea railway yards.

Duluth Missabe & Iron Range SD18

[DM&IR SD18 photo here] The closing of the Great Lakes shipping season during the winter months usually meant excess motive power for ore-hauling railroads along Lake Superior. Duluth Missabe & Iron Range railroad often responded by leasing components of its sizable fleet of EMD-built SD9s and SD18s to other carriers, such as the SOO, Milwaukee Road and Illinois Central. This late February, 1965 photograph shows DM&IR SD18 #183 at the Flat Rock, MI enginehouse of the Detroit, Toledo & Iron railway, with DT&I GP9 #989.

Penn Central Cab Units

[GTW F3 photo here] In the 1960s and 1970s, the station platform in Marion, OH was always a good vantage point from which to watch the mainline action on four different railroads. Besides the Erie-Lackawana's large yard and engine facilities, Marion hosted traffic from the Chesapeake & Ohio, Norfolk & Western and newly created Penn Central. Depicted here in this late July 1969 photograph are five PC (NYC and PRR) cabs on the point of an eastbound merchandiser. Evident only to ALCo fans is the trailing FA2 unit which not only has to pull the lengthy freight consist but also has to push the four EMD cabs in the lead.
