The Baldwin Bits

CHESAPEAKE & OHIO AS-616

[C&O photo here] The location is Greenville, PA on the Bessemer & Lake Erie RR in April of 1971. The C&O #2217 is one of several six-axle Baldwin roadswitchers on short-term lease to the B&LE while the railroad waits on the delivery of new 2000 horsepower SDs from EMD.

NEW YORK CENTRAL RS12

[NYC RS12 photo here] The RS12 was introduced by BLW in 1951; total production of the 4-axle roadswitcher counted 46 units. The largest single purchaser of the model was the New York Central which rostered 17 units -- #6220 to 6236. With the NYC and Pennsylvania RR merger, the Baldwins were renumbered into a consolidated Penn Central numbering scheme. The #8067 was captured in June of 1969 in Pittsburgh, PA while still adorned with the NYC "cigar band". Photo by Ray Sabo.

NEW YORK CENTRAL LRS12

[NYC LRS12 photo here] By August 1965 when this picture was taken, the number of Lima-built locomotives still operating on the NYC -- or for that matter on any railroad -- had dwindled. Constructed in 1950, the #6202 was one of only 16 1200 hp light roadswithchers produced by the Ohio-based locomotive builder. Equipped with steam generators, LRS-12s could be found in commuter as well as NYC freight service.
